A Refreshing Splash of New Design

Eye-washing devices provide emergency eye irrigation for workplace and lab safety.

Challenge

WaterSaver needed to modernize its eye-washing safety devices with a more ergonomic handle design while maintaining its proven internal valve system. The challenge was creating a clean, contemporary look that improved user experience during emergency situations when proper ergonomics are critical for effective eye care and cleaning. The new design had to integrate with existing eye washer heads and enhance the overall functionality through better housing structure and release valve button placement.

Process

Designers focused on reimagining the product housing structure while preserving WaterSaver’s reliable internal valve system. Through extensive form exploration, we investigated various ergonomic approaches to handle design, considering how users would grip and activate the system during high-stress emergencies.

Early prototype model building became essential to our design validation process. These physical models were 3D printed in-house and allowed designers and engineers to test different grip positions, button placements, and activation mechanisms before committing to final specifications. The design was refined with the integrated release valve button positioning to ensure intuitive operation while maintaining the clean, contemporary aesthetic WaterSaver desired. The final design was developed using SolidWorks CAD for precise engineering integration.

Impact

With Beyond Design’s help, WaterSaver successfully transformed its eye-washing safety devices with an ergonomic handle that met the Client’s vision for a contemporary, user-focused emergency eye-washing equipment. The new design improved user experience during critical situations while maintaining the reliability of their proven valve system. The clean, modern aesthetic positioned WaterSaver as an innovative leader in workplace and lab safety equipment, offering both functional improvement and visual appeal to architects and safety specifiers.
