New Scale of Measurement

Hobart HLX Scale & User Interface Redesign

Beyond Design partnered with Hobart to redesign their HLX scale, which involved a complete redesign of the body and integration of optional screen interfaces for the operator and the customer. Our team was responsible for developing the interactive touch screen display that provides enhanced organization and process.

Developing the user interface, industrial design, and engineering for an everyday food service scale.

As a product that is commonly visible in almost all supermarkets, it was interesting to discover the amount of information and interaction a weighing scale holds. Beyond partnered with Hobart to redesign the HLX model, which involved a complete redesign of the body with an interactive touch screen for the every day user.

The HLX scale was designed for three user types – the everyday operator, the manager who controls the detail, and the service technician. With design and UX/UI capabilities in-house, both projects ran concurrently, constantly merging at different phases of the project to validate the integration. An information hierarchy was developed based on the level and frequency of different types of users. Multiple visual themes were explored including modern, minimal, glossy, metallic, etc.  We played with button sizes/shapes, colors, icons, etc. to develop the most intuitive and clear display.

Our team developed a layout that minimized the errors of unintentional selections and combined this with the finer features required to customize the daily business transaction. With so much information hidden behind the touchscreen, it gives the user the option to keep it as simple or as detailed as they would like. The interface design was integrated beautifully with the newly designed and engineered HLX model for Hobart.
