Getting to the Root of the Problem

Dr. Orrington DDS approached Beyond Design with a passion for dentistry and an innovative idea. His vision was to develop an advanced dental device that shields clinicians from harmful aerosols. The device would be a non-intrusive barrier between the dentist and the patient to ensure safety and visibility.

We guided Dr. Orrington throughout the entire product development journey. We started with market research and interviews with additional dental professionals (including hygienists and dentists) to pinpoint crucial features and design aspects. Insights were studied and formulated into product concepts and sketches for visual storytelling. As the development progressed, foam core sketch models provided initial human factors and test ergonomics. Industrial Designers work closely with Engineering to create CAD models with the intent of manufacturing.

Lights, Camera, Action

The AirGuard XP incorporates an interactive HD camera and screen that folds down and allows the user to record procedures. The camera also can zoom in and out by a factor of 10 and transmit live or saved to share for review.

The design team’s exploration of various prototypes resulted in a solution that addressed critical dental requirements, such as protection from aerosols, improved lighting, and video documentation. These features empower dentists to observe and document procedures effectively while prioritizing safety.

The AirGuard XP received the Planet Innovation Bright Award and was a featured winner on the CBS show America by Design.
