Cutting-edge medical design.
Beyond Design partnered with NICO Corporation and Garrett Technologies to create the industrial design and user interface for the NICO Myriad SPECTRA. The SPECTRA supports brain surgeries that involve removing tumors and evaluating clots. It is the first product of its kind to offer hand-held directional lighting with non-thermal and non-ablative resections.
Operators can use the SPECTRA during surgery to toggle between white and blue fluorescent light. The white light provides general visibility, while the blue light excites fluorescent dyes to make specific areas glow. The glowing fluorescent dye allows surgeons to easily identify and accurately remove tumors because the area of operation will shine when exposed to the blue light.
The exterior industrial design and user interface were updated with modern design elements. The product’s housing had to stand out from standard medical designs to communicate the SPECTRA’s distinct features. The design direction combined soft geometric forms with bold color blocking to stand out and look professional in the operating rooms. The unit introduced a brand-new capacitive touchscreen for fluid interactions. For the internal functionality of the SPECTRA, Beyond Design’s user experience team developed a fresh UX interface and graphics. The designers strategized the information architecture and user workflow to create an optimal GUI prototype. The combination of Color, Materials, Finish, and Graphics (CFMG) reflects the SPETRA’s advanced technology and surgical benefits.
Additionally, Beyond Design created a custom logo for the product that matches the NICO
