Husqvarna has the market’s widest, most innovative and powerful range of machinery and tools for the construction and stone industries. With increased competition, Husqvarna came to Beyond Design to help develop their first 10” blade wet tile saw that could cut up to 28” tile. The TS 60 is intended for both DIY and Professional users.

Researching a Better Design

Extensive design research was conducted to understand the category and the user’s needs. This included competitive benchmarking, field ethnography, focus groups, interviews, and listening to feedback from professional installers, DIY users, and sales people. Based on this research, we were able to compare and evaluate key features and usability objectives to map the best opportunities for the project. The ultimate goals were to reduce or eliminate water splatter, ensure portability, support larger tiles, and feature a rail system that delivers precise cuts.

The Jet Stream Containment System

The TS 60 is a robust, full-featured wet tile saw with a revolutionary water containment system that was strategically designed and engineered to provide precise cuts as well as reduce unwanted water splatter. The patented Jet Stream Containment System dramatically reduces water around the cutting area by directing the water through a channel in the conveyor cart, cooling and lubricating the blade before it cuts the material, while also minimizing spray and slurry outside the frame of the saw. This keeps the area surrounding the saw free of water spray, allowing cutting to be done inside if necessary. The water is flushed out the back of the cart where it is captured by an extendable sleeve and recycled back into the water pan.

Focusing on Ergonomics and Precision

The TS 60 tile saw delivers simple, ergonomic, and high precision cutting. The custom rail system boasts solid turned aluminum rollers with overmolded Duracon wheels for smooth feeding of tile into the blade and a more precise cut. The depth of the cut is 2.75” and easily switches between plunge and miter cuts. The product itself is lighter in weight than most tile saws, only 79 lbs., and extremely mobile with the addition of roller wheels that are integrated in the unibody frame. Additional features include a removable cart extension, rip guide and height adjustable stand.

The final TS 60 design captures our client’s brand language with the use of color, form, and overall industrial design. The entire design process focused on developing a product that was appropriate for commercialization.
