Two Chicago police officers, turned entrepreneurs, approached Beyond Design with an idea inspired by their Shark Tank viewing experience. They identified a real need in the fitness market: people wanted a convenient way to adjust their free weights during exercise without interrupting their workout flow or requiring multiple sets of dumbbells.

Their vision was an add-on accessory that could quickly attach to existing dumbbell handles and add precise weight increments of 5 to 10 pounds. The design challenge was creating a product that was secure, accurate, and comfortable while maintaining the natural feel of free weight training.

We developed a wrap-around design that secures to dumbbell handles using strategically placed magnets, allowing for quick attachment and removal during workouts. The engineering focus was on incredible accuracy – the final product needed to deliver consistent 5 or 10 pound increments every time, which required precise weight distribution and manufacturing tolerances. The development process also included comprehensive color studies to help our entrepreneur clients determine their optimal marketing direction and brand positioning. We worked closely with them to understand both the technical requirements and the business realities of bringing a fitness accessory to market.

A critical aspect of the design was maintaining user comfort. We made the accessory as thin as possible, so the grip remained comfortable and the overall feel stayed natural. Additionally, we addressed a common frustration with traditional weights by incorporating a hexagonal shape that prevents the accessories from rolling when set down, while also providing a distinctive visual appearance that sets Awei apart in the crowded fitness market.

The result is an innovative solution that transforms any standard dumbbell set into a more versatile training tool, giving fitness enthusiasts the flexibility to make precise weight adjustments without the expense and storage requirements of multiple dumbbell sets. The Awei system successfully addresses a real market need while providing entrepreneurs with a distinctive, manufacturable product ready for the competitive fitness accessory market.
