It’s not every day that artists are given the opportunity to transform a well-known Chicago landmark into an interactive experience. From now until February 20th, “Cloud Gate” (known to many Chicagoans as “The Bean”), is transformed after dark into an interactive, choreographed light show titled Luminous Field. “The Bean” becomes a canvas of light and geometrical forms that was created by local artist Luftwerk, which is made up of the creative vision of Petra Bachmaier and Sean Gallero. The artists use video and light with material, surface, and structure to create a unique experience under the sculpture.

“We like the combination of image and surface, and the surface can be a structure, an architectural space, or a material,” Bachmaier says. “What happens between those two is what really interests us.”

For the next few days, “The Bean” becomes a place where the public can interact and play with the large scale sculpture in an entertaining and memorable way. It starts at 6pm each day—be sure to check it out if you’re in the city!
