The Future of the Steering Wheel

August 30, 2011

Over the past couple of weeks, Aldis Rauda, who recently relocated from California after working at BoomBang Inc., spent time in our studio and worked with our design team to explore lifestyle trends and technology integration to automotive steering wheels. Aldis coined this project “W22” which stands for Wagen 2022 vision.

The accelerated program was successful and led to some thought-provoking conversations among the design team. Our team helped Aldis develop concepts and continually gave him new ideas and feedback on his steering wheel concepts.

In the end, three concepts were developed and intended for different types of users—the Deal Maker, the Street Racer, and the Caretaker. Each persona communicates visual cues to better comprehend the user needs, applications and environment. The wheel is custom designed with performance and luxury features that incorporate new interactive features to create a more enjoyable user experience.

The Deal Maker
One of the best things about the Deal Maker’s steering wheel is that the interface incorporates a calendar that helps him or her remember important meeting times and personal events.

The Street Racer
The Street Racer’s steering wheel includes a display that shows all status checks and technical aspects of his vehicle. His voice command is detected by the W22 and responds with an elaborate display of specifications for his car.

The Caretaker
A busy mom or dad on-the-go can always use something that helps simplify their life. The Caretaker’s steering wheel connects with a camera installed in the backseat so that he or she can see what the children may need without having to turn around.

With customizable steering wheels, you really do have everything you need in one place. You can take a look at each concept in more detail in the attached PDF.
