The Influence of Materials in Industrial Design: Smart Forvision Concept
We are always keeping an eye on the future of materials and how they can improve or influence our industrial design. In this interesting development, BASF has been working with Smart Car to develop polymer wheel rims for their smart forvision concept vehicle. They are using a composite plastic called Ultramid® Structure which has reinforcing glass fibers to make it more robust. This video shows some great views of a complex injection molding machine in action, and can give you an idea as what sort of thought needs to go into part design for production as well as what material to specify to manufacturers and why.
