The current action camera market has been dominated by startup companies like GoPro and Contour. As more and more people are becoming concerned about safety when riding bikes and motorcycles, they often want to have some kind of record should an incident occur. Recently, the big dogs like Sony and JVC are looking to edge in on the action camera market.

Sony’s new Action Cam (which is currently in the prototype phase and has yet to be given an official name), is much smaller than other action cam’s we’ve seen on the market. According to Engadget, who had a chance to check out the prototype, there were a variety of mounts available to demonstrate the shooter’s versatility – including a handlebar attachment, helmet holster, and some “some sort of plastic enclosure that could presumably be used to shield the Action Cam from underwater hazards, though Sony declined to confirm.” It looks like a pretty great camera. The official launch is planned for this fall.

In addition to Sony, JVC introduced their GC-XA1 ADIXXION. The action cam, with its WiFi, HD video, and 5x digital zoom, will definitely provide some fierce competition for Sony and other companies in the action camera market. JVC’s product should be out in late summer. You can read more about Sony’s action cam here, and JVC’s here.
