Miami College of Design
The Wynwood neighborhood is already booming with artists, technologists and creative people. In the near future, it will be home to the Miami College of Design, which is Florida’s first accredited college focused solely on industrial design. With Miami becoming one of the hot spots in the United States for young people, the founders of the college want to focus their efforts on making this college a place where ideas become real.
The Miami College of Design is seeking to advance the integration of design, science and engineering by allowing students to focus on the design process, which will allow them to find new approaches and solutions to their ideas. Walter Bender and Franco Lodato, both experts in industrial design, are looking to frame the curriculum by approaching human-centered and nature-inspired design which will enhance the human experience for their students to learn. The school will be project-based, as students will be working on projects with professionals – who will eventually become their mentors.
The new building is under construction, which broke ground last week. Taking the front and rear of the two-story warehouse, the architects are expanding it and adding a third floor with a rooftop garden as a social space for students. With Miami being a city full of new ideas and approaches, the founders are excited to bring this college to life for students that want to make and do things with products.
