Katie DeLaurentis Joins Our Team for the Summer
We are excited to welcome Katie DeLaurentis to our team for the summer! Katie just completed her first year as a Masters candidate in Engineering Design and Innovation at Northwestern University. She received her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo California.
“I gravitated toward Mechanical Engineering because I’ve always been interested in the way things work and enjoyed creating with my hands. While studying Mechanical Engineering, I was looking for ways to integrate creative thinking and problem solving aspects into ME Design, and a professor introduced me to Human-Centered Design Thinking. I was delighted to find that through design I could merge two of my passions: creative engineering and cognitive psychology.
I find inspiration through observing and talking to users. Paying attention to the customers’ true needs forces me to take a step back and think outside the box. I especially enjoy ethnographic design research and mechanism design: understanding what people think and need, and creating mechanisms that make products work.
After graduating, I hope to join an integrated design consultancy where I can utilize my mechanism design and design research skills on a variety of different projects. Right now, I’m enjoying summer in Chicago – I love the fresh energy of the city, being able to get around easily via public transportation, and photographing the architecture.”
