International Home + Housewares Show

March 19, 2018

The Beyond Design team took over McCormick Place last weekend to explore the annual International Home + Housewares Show. As one of our favorite events, we connected with hundreds of innovative exhibitors and got a first look at new trends in the industry. Take a look at the highlights below!

Smokeless Heat
Philips’ smokeless grill brings outdoor cooking to your kitchen. With an attachable rotisserie feature, the grill ensures a consistent rotation locking in all the flavor. The grill is also virtually smoke-less, heating up to 446 degrees Fahrenheit.

Grow Anywhere
Opcom’s indoor garden solutions were a refreshing preview to spring. The hydroponics system ranges from the desktop Grow Box to the five tier GrowWall (below). The living units are extremely efficient (with an auto-mode) and uses a soil-less growing method. The Wall can host up to 75 plants and has high intensity sun simulating LED lights. Perfect for trendy restaurants, offices, and the home.

Built to Go + Built to Last
Built’s Welded Cooler can hold up to 10 pounds of ice and 18 cans. Despite the durable shell, the cooler has a rollable opening and when empty folds down to half the size. All items are kept perfectly insulated and it guarantees a leak-proof transport. And in case you forget your bottle opener for the picnic, Built installed one right on the bag.

Cranking Up the Pressure
Of the thousands of exhibitors we were especially excited to see our friends at Instant Pot and their new pressure cooker, the Instant Pot Max. The Max kicks up the pressure to 15 pounds per inch (ppi) and includes a new canning feature. The user interface was also an update on the cooker with an easy to use LED light background and a temperature dial, ensuring precise temperature control.

Show-Within-A-Show
The Show features 2,200+ exhibitors from over 45 countries and hosts 62,000 attendees from 125 countries. Our Beyond team of 13 covered as many of the “show-within-a-show expos” as we could. Spring intern, Hoon, needed a quick rest before covering more ground though.

Tap Sensor for Tied Hands
Ninestars patented motion sensor technology allows convenience and quick use of the modern trash can. While we glided past the line of colorful trash cans, with one tap they opened smoothly and quickly. Their exhibit also displayed their tap trash cans, with a light tap of the lower panel the bin opens and closes gently. Both products have a 2 year warranty, non skid base, and a guaranteed soft close.

Filtered + Pure Wine
Another client of ours, Ullo, made a splash with their line of wine purifiers and filters. Using Selective Sulfite Capture™ technology, red and white wines are stripped of sulfates and restored to their natural and rich flavors. The filters sit atop any standard wine class and are also fitted for carafes and decanters to complete any connoisseur’s home bar.

Bird of Paradise
KitchenAid announced their color of the year: Bird of Paradise. The creamy coral color has a Floridian tropical feel and will be splashed on six countertop products just in time for spring and summer: The Artisan Series 5 Quart Tilt-Head Stand Mixer Artisan Mini 3.5 Quart Tilt-Head Stand Mixer, 5-Speed Diamond Blender, 3.5 Cup Mini Food Processor, 2-Speed Hand Blender, and 5-Speed Ultra Power Hand Mixer. Bird of Paradise will add a vibrant pop to any kitchen.

Beyond Speaks at Smart Talks Panel
Beyond Design’s own industrial designer, Carter Gerard, was invited to speak at the IHHA Smart Talks Panel during Saturday’s show. Accompanied by David Kelbaugh of Tacklebox Brand Solutions, Carter discussed how to design for today’s consumer in a growing e-commerce market. The panel was a preview of our Speaking Amazon event in our studio at the end of the month which will dive into the topic in full.
