Johnson Controls' Smart Thermostat

GLAS Ready to Ship Tomorrow

August 22, 2018

Our friends at Johnson Controls partnered with Microsoft to create the GLAS smart thermostat with Cortana capabilities last year and it is nearly ready for release! Our designers worked on an early version of GLAS last year and we are excited for the final product to launch this summer.  The official release is this Friday, August 24th.

Unobtrusive and Attentive

Johnson Control’s beautiful and translucent thermostat was released last year and they have now taken the device a step further by including the smart assistant. Their competition includes the Nest and Ecobee (both of which are in our office and we used for research purposes) with their prices falling slightly lower than the GLAS. To compare, the GLAS can be preordered at $319, while the Ecobee/Alexa is around $220 with sale prices dropping it slightly lower.

GLAS is unique and stands out from their rivals because it actively tries to make your home healthier. GLAS monitors humidity, CO2 levels, and overall air quality. Other stand out features include:

– Outdoor air quality reporting including allergens, air quality index and UV index
– Built with Microsoft Cortana and works with Amazon Alexa and the Google Assistant
– Beautiful user interface and a translucent OLED touchscreen
– Program your own schedule or allow GLAS to do it for you using the integrated occupancy sensor to create a comfortable space when you are at home
– Mobile connectivity with free GLAS by JCI smart thermostat mobile app available for smartphones and tablets on both iOS and Android
– Control multiple GLAS thermostats in different locations with one mobile app

Early packaging options Beyond designed for GLAS.

“GLAS provides you with the information you need to help make your home healthier. The smart thermostat monitors relative humidity, total Volatile Organic Compounds (tVOCs), and equivalent CO2 (eCO2) levels indoors. It even reports pollen and air quality outdoors – especially helpful for asthma or allergy sufferers. And with features like fan runtime options, smart circulation, and smart ventilation, you’ll have more control over your air quality than ever before.”

You’ll be able to ask Cortana to tell you the temperature, forecasts, raise or lower the heat, etc. with the Windows 10 Iot GLAS operating system. You can preorder your shiny new thermostat at Johnson Controls website here. “Developing GLAS really allowed our team to think outside of the box, understand consumers and create a customer-back design that is both beautiful in form and also very functional.” – Don Albinger, Vice President, and General Manager building automation systems, Johnson Controls.
