Ex-Pixar Designer Redefines Storytelling on the iPad

July 15, 2011

The rapid advancement of technology has had a huge impact on how generations grow up today. Young children are now playing with Xbox’s rather than out in the backyard, and using iPad’s and Smartphones instead of a notepad, coloring book, or a reading book.

eBooks and interactive book apps tend to immerse the reader in a way that paper books can’t. William Joyce, a well-known illustrator and animator due to his work for Pixar, DreamWorks, Disney, and the New Yorker, has created an app that blurs the line between a children’s story eBook and an animated movie. Joyce, along with his team at Moonbot Studios, created “The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore.”

The coolest thing about this app is that each page of the book has a hidden feature embedded it that you have to find on your own. It allows the kids to become more engaged in the reading, and provides an interactive learning experience. You can read all about this new children’s book at FastCompany and view a sneak peek of the book below.
