A Holistic Approach: My Experience at Beyond Design

August 4, 2011

“The ability to be creative and quickly adapt is crucial for an industrial design engineer at a design consulting firm, where the change of focus and daily tasks can change as swiftly as the winds of the Windy City. What it comes down to at the end of the day is engineers and designers coming together to design great things.”

Over the years, we have had numerous students join our internship program in order to learn more about our product development process and gain “real-world” experience. In the summer of 2009, David Breur joined our team from Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden. He had a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design Engineering and planned to go back to school in Sweden to earn his Masters Degree. While his original plan was to stay in the Chicago until March of 2010, he extended his stay so that he could spend more time developing his skills and learning all he could about product design and engineering.

As part of his school requirement, he was asked to write a brief article about his early experience at Beyond Design. In part of his article, David writes, “Beyond Design, Inc. works according to a step-by-step process that enables designers and engineers to create innovative industrial design solutions and business opportunities for the customers. The process involves understanding the problem, gaining insight to user desires, and developing a strategy that adheres to the clients marketing objectives. This combined with the need to get to market fast and design around parameters that include aggressive cost targets and manufacturing capabilities makes this experience valuable to me.”

To read more about what projects David worked on while at our studio, as well as his experiences both inside and outside of work in Chicago, check out his full article.
