From Participant to Judge: Housewares Show Student Design Competition

March 13, 2014

The IHA student design competition is in its 21st year and designer Trevis Kurz, a designer at  Beyond Design, was on the Jury this year. Trevis was a winner four years ago from The Ohio State University. It was a different experience for him to participate as a judge rather than a student. His thoughts on the process are below.

“It was an eye opening experience to participate as a judge this year.  It cemented the fact that this is a fantastic competition for students to enter. As a student you really can’t comprehend what happens to the submission booklet that you have spent weeks laboring on from the time you submit it to the time the results are announced. The Jury process is very thorough and every booklet gets read page by page.

The quality of the work being judged this year was outstanding and really demonstrated how the capabilities of what is expected of an industrial designer are expanding. Work from the students included deep dives into empathetic research, brainstorming, extensive prototyping, user testing/validation, great sketching, CAD renderings, and process layout/documentation. Entries went even further with video, animations, branding, a full product line, and costing estimates.

It was really inspiring to see how much passion and meticulous detail went into the entries.  A select few of the students were selected as winners and have the opportunity to present their work at the International Housewares Show in Chicago. On the day we met to select the top projects, each judge presented five booklets or so to the rest of the panel as if that project was their own. The IHA competition was a milestone in my college career and I could not recommend it more.”

Congratulations to every student that submitted an entry this year.  Also, big congratulations to the winners who will be presenting at the Housewares Show this weekend! Details on the winners (and honorable mentions) are below.
