The mock-up session was another favorite among the students. We discussed basic metal fabrication processes with them and demonstrated what a flat pattern is and how to form it into a 3D shape.

In their teams, students were shown how to properly document their product idea with drawings. They created flat patterns on Bristol board to practice what it would be like to create a mock-up with foam core. Later, as a team, they constructed a mock-up out of foam core to represent their design.

“My favorite session was building the product mock-up at Beyond Design.”

Toward the end of the session, each team presented their concept as an “infomercial”. It was entertaining to watch them try to sell their idea!

“One of the most important things I learned was how to model a product before building it.”

A few photos from the session are below.

Students are taught how to create a flat pattern for their design.

Mentors help the students create a flat pattern on Bristol board for practice.

Students were able to create their own mock-up for the product.

Each team had a different idea for the organization product.

Teams evaluate their mock-ups.

Each team had the opportunity to present their product idea to the class as an infomercial. Team 'Innovate This' presents here.

Team Cellabella presents their "Simply Hang" idea.

Lucky 7 presents their customizable magnetic solution.

Silepatoo presents their "Handy Hanger" to the class.

The Magic Innovators present their idea through a song.

Team 'The Unknown' presents a piece of their caterpillar idea.

JBDT presents their idea for a customizable whiteboard organization device.

The Cre8ors present the Elephant Hook to the class.

The final design that was chosen to move forward is currently on Kickstarter. While we have already met our goal (thanks to all those who have donated!), any funding above this goal will go back into the program and help spread SEE and dig-8 to more students and more schools!
